After completely changing the world of film back in 2007 with the release of the RED ONE Digital Cinema Camera, it appears RED is once again about to change how we both see and capture images.

When I first heard that RED were developing a smartphone that featured the worlds first hydrogen holographic display, I couldn’t help but feel like it would end up being a bit of a gimmick. I mean, cool it’s great that we will have a device that allows for VR/AR type experiences without a headset, but for me that’s not enough to part with AUD$2,000+ for a new phone. Especially when it’s their first attempt at anything in this market and that likely means more bugs than termite mound!

Then, about a week ago I saw this video by Marquez Brownlee and very quickly changed my tune:

What RED have built (or are still building) is the worlds first Pocket Cinema Camera Phone. Modular like all RED cameras, there will be the facility to add a sensor, a lens mount and a whole bunch of other accessories that will turn the phone into a fully fledged digital cinema camera. I find the prospect of this SUPER exciting and have no doubt that I will be purchasing one of these in the near future. I’m not sure about pre-ordering something that doesn’t actually exist in its complete form yet, so I’ll likely wait until they are released and available for direct purchase.

So for now, it’s just a waiting game. With RED’s reputation for missing release dates and taking forever to build cameras, I’ll just put my patience hat on and sit tight.
